When used wisely, the sun has more positive
than negative effect on our bodies. But as
with any good thing, too much sun can be
dangerous-the sun should be enjoyed, but
precautions should be taken to avoid the
harmful, chronic effects of overexposure. And
though it is necessary to protect yourself from
the sun, shielding yourself altogether can be
even more problematic. |

Sunlight has the potential to promote mental health
and well-being and UVA rays stimulate the skin to
produce Vitamin D. It's difficult to get an adequate
amount of Vitamin D-which boosts energy levels,
sharpens mental faculties strengthens the bones
and immune system and has even been proven to
reduce the risk of several types of cancer-through
diet alone. Unlike Vitamin D from the sun, which is
general the primary source, Vitamin D from milk and
supplements is synthetic. |

While some slight browning of the skin can be
good, as skin pigmentation is nature's way of
fighting free radicals, the burning effect of UVB
rays can be quite dangerous. While trying to
darken their skin, people often end up with the
negative visible effects of burnt skin and dead
skin cells and, more permanently, the brown liver
spots caused by exaggerated sun exposure.
UVA rays can increase the speed and level of
skin aging dramatically, multiplying and aggra-
vating wrinkles, widening blood vessels and
causing permanently red, leathery areas. |

A far more serious result of a lifetime of overexpo-
sure to the sun (both UVA and UVB rays) is a skin
cancer called malignant melanoma. Though the dis-
ease evolves from birthmarks and can remain small
for a long time, it spreads and develops rapidly. Tan-
ning booths or beds, which give off only UVA rays,
are not safe from this risk-in fact, there is evidence
that the risk of melanoma from tanning beds is even
higher than from natural sunlight. The whole UV
spectrum can cause cancer. UVC rays, the most
dangerous, cause cancer easily, and with our ozone
layer weakened, we no longer have a reliable filter.
To get only enough sun exposure to get the bene-
fits, you'd need to sit in the sun unprotected for a
very short amount of time, but not enough to really
enjoy it. The solution is, of course, safe sun expo-
sure with proper protection. That's where THE KING
