High-quality and professional, but quite loud Feb 08, 2011

Some background:
I've been using some basic Wahl "Balding" clippers now for several years. I'm not sure of the model, but they're red and were about $45. Recently, they started acting up on me, in that they would sort of pull on the hairs and not actually cut them. I always lubricate them and occasionally take them apart to clean things up or adjust, but it just didn't fix it this time, and so I needed some new clippers (since I didn't trust to just buy new blades for 'em).
I generally liked the Wahl's and thought they were rather nice quality, but then I got the Oster's. This is my primary frame of reference here. Price paid (with shipping and tax): ~$147.
Where the Oster's excel:
(1) They're sturdy and well-built.
(2) They have little/no vibration, which feels smooth compared to the "vibrator" type clippers, such as the Wahl I have.
(3) Though the blades do get warm rather quickly during use, they don't seem to get above a certain, reasonable-to-handle temperature. This is due to the Oster's built-in blower-based cooling system. The Wahl clippers I have get really hot after a while and I think that might have contributed to their recently developed dysfunction.
(4) Even though a 00000 blade is rather close, these Oster clippers are MUCH safer and smoother to cut with. The Wahl clippers would easily cut you when adjusted to around the same as the 00000 blade, but the Oster's are much nicer. I'm not talking a small difference here, either; the 00000 blades seem to be sanded or something, which keeps them from catching on the skin like the Wahl's do.
(5) The whole "push blade back and it comes off" thing is really nice, and is easy to use when switching blades or cleaning. It's also really nice to not have to adjust the length and position of the blades when putting back on (like with the Wahl's). The blades are as one unit that can be taken off and replaced with another, without the need for any tools.
(6) The switch is in a nice position, which doesn't get too easily toggled in use.
Where they're not the best:
(1) These things really are loud. I mean, I expected them to be louder than "vibrator" clippers (like the Wahl I have), but they exceeded my expectations on loudness. After working on my head for a while during first use, my ears were practically ringing when I turned the clippers off. They don't sound that loud when you first turn them on, but having it by your ears for a while can get to you (depending on your hearing sensitivity, of course). To relate the loudness honestly and accurately, I feel that they not only sound like, but are about as loud as average electric egg-beaters; you know, that handheld kitchen appliance with the two spinning, whisk-like things. They also sound sort of like a vacuum cleaner, though not so loud.
(2) They're quite large, both in length and girth. They're definitely bigger than the Wahl clippers I have, in length (by about 1.5 inches) and girth (overall, though they have about the same maximum). To be honest, though, it's no big deal for me, but I could see it as a potential problem for those with small hands. Also, it might be a bit trickier to be precise with these, bigger clippers, but that also has to do with getting used to their cylindrical shape.
(3) They're heavier than the Wahl clippers I have, though not by much. Some might not be ready to handle such a serious machine, especially if they're used to battery-powered "personal grooming" clippers.
Conclusion:
Overall, I do feel satisfied with them and I recommend them if noise and size aren't too much of concern. The easily switchable blades, blower-cooling and smooth (no-snag) 00000 cutting are selling points for me. The primary negative for me is the loudness, and I might even use earplugs with them eventually. This machine feels and looks professional, and both the blades and the unit are made in the USA.
I should probably note, however, that the unit seems to have been manufactured quite long ago, like over 10 years before I bought it "new". The box had a copyright from like 1996, one of the lubricants, like 1993, and the extra, '1' blade-box says 1980 (and this package was bought in 2011). I made sure the unit's gears were still lubricated before running it, but it seems to work fine.

Oster Power Line is by far the best clipper... Mar 07, 2011

The Oster Power Line,is a great clipper, it gets the job done right every time. I really love the 00000 blade it comes with, gets the cut nice and tight. The clipper itself is real sturdy and well built, you can tell it is built to last. The motor is real powerful and seems that it will hold up over time. The only thing that ya have to be aware of, is that a clipper like this needs a tad more maintenance then your average clipper, not only do ya have to oil the blades, but ya have to grease the motor. Its really not a big deal, and they include a bottle of grease with the clipper.
Overall, I am really satisfied with the Oster Power Line, and I cant see myself using anything but the best from here on out...

This clipper is great!
I bought it to replace some old vibratory clippers and I'm glad I did. These clippers use a true side-to-side motion that just powers through hair without getting clogged or pulling.
Blade changes are effortless and the 00000 blade cuts extremely close.
All the parts in the clipper are replaceable and the parts can be purchased on the internet so you can rebuild/fix it yourself. Very durable and high quality construction.
Very pleased with this purchase. If you use clippers once a week or more you owe it to yourself to get a good one, I am very pleased with mine.
This is the same clipper as the Classic 76 except in black.

THe clippers are good, I had another pair (wahl)that cut a little closer, but would catch on my head sometimes. This pair is clean and do not catch on my skin. I would recommend these to someone who wants a good pair of clippers and are willing to invest in them.

This is a powerful clipper, made for heavy professional use. I purchased it for basic home use as a replacement to a 7 year old Wahl. I have owned several Wahl clippers before and they did a great job, but the high carbon blade teeth kept breaking so I finally decided to go up-market.
The Pros;
The power!
Solid build quality, it's made to last.
Two sets of blades mean you can trim, and shave really close by simply switching the blades, in a snap.
The 00000 blade is Great for bald shaves and does a great job trimming the edges (no need for a separate trimmer).
The Cons;
It makes more noise that a light duty clipper, but it is not that bothersome, besides because the clippers are so powerful you start and finish your task in no time.
They are a little heavy, but again easily manageable
I found this the hard way but the sharp blades and powerful motor are not a good combination if you intend to use the clippers to shave facial hair. They shave really close but do a number on the skin. Why do I not use a razor you may ask; that too causes me major skin irritation.
If I had to do it again I would buy the Fast Feed Professional clipper. It's less powerful than the Powerline, but has a more powerful motor than the Wahl, and has more durable blades. That would be a better trade off for moderate home use in my opinion. The Powerline makes a great investment for barbers.
